Maria-Theresa Fernandes was born in Kenya and has lived in the UK and the
USA for a number of years. She currently lives in Baltimore,USA.

Travel and Place have been predominant in her life and work. These life
experiences and journeys are expressed emotively. The early works show
drawings, etchings, embroideries and mixed media. Since moving to the USA
in the early 1980s the works are larger in scale and the installations show a range
of works that are influenced by Place and the various National and International
residencies.

In the early 2000s Maria-Theresa moved back to the UK and lived in E. London
the work at this time reflected the communities and the rich cultural diversity
of the Place.

In 2014 Maria-Theresa relocated to the USA. The death of Freddie Gray
and the unrest that followed resulted in a series of collaborative works that
include poems that relate to the issues of social justice and the disparities of
the rich and the poor neighbourhoods in the USA.
